How to Reach Goa

I've taken every route into Goa — flights, trains, buses, and one very long road trip. Here's exactly what works.

By Air — The No-Brainer Choice

Flying is what I recommend for anyone coming from more than 500 km away. Goa has two airports now, and picking the right one can save you an hour of driving on the other end.

Dabolim Airport (GOI)

  • Location: 29 km from Panjim, 5 km from Vasco da Gama
  • Best for: South Goa stays, Panjim, Old Goa
  • Airlines: IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet, Akasa Air
  • Direct flights from: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad
  • Vibe: Older, busier, more flight options. The taxi counter is well-organized.

Manohar International Airport (GOX)

  • Location: Mopa, 50 km from Panjim, 35 km from Arambol
  • Best for: North Goa beaches (Arambol, Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem)
  • Airlines: IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express, SpiceJet
  • Direct flights from: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow
  • Vibe: Brand new (opened 2023), modern, less crowded. Still adding routes.

Typical Flight Costs (one-way, economy)

Mumbai

₹2,500-5,000

Delhi

₹4,000-8,000

Bangalore

₹3,000-6,000

Kolkata

₹4,500-9,000

Peak season (Dec-Jan) prices can be 3-4x these ranges. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for best fares.

My tip: If you're flexible on airports, check both GOI and GOX on the same date. I've seen ₹2,000+ price differences on the same airline. GOX is still building its route network, so fares are sometimes aggressively low.

By Train — The Scenic Route (My Guilty Pleasure)

The Konkan Railway is one of India's most beautiful rail routes — 92 tunnels, 2,000+ bridges, and coastal views that make the journey part of the trip. I take the train from Mumbai at least twice a year.

Goa's Railway Stations

MAO

Madgaon Junction (Margao)

Main station. All major trains stop here. Best for South Goa stays. Well-connected with taxis and local buses. 35 km from Panjim.

THVM

Thivim

North Goa station. Closest to Baga, Calangute, Mapusa. Many express trains stop here. 20 km from Calangute.

KRMI

Karmali (Old Goa)

Smallest but closest to Panjim (12 km) and Old Goa churches. Only select trains stop here — check before booking.

VSG

Vasco da Gama

Terminal station near Dabolim airport. Useful backup if Madgaon is fully booked. Limited but growing train options.

Ticket Classes & Costs (Mumbai → Madgaon)

My tip: 3AC on the Mandovi Express (overnight) is the sweet spot — you sleep through the boring part and wake up to Konkan coastline. For the fastest, most comfortable option, try the Tejas Express — fully AC with meals included. Book on IRCTC 120 days ahead. If waitlisted, try Tatkal booking at 10 AM for AC classes (11 AM for non-AC) the day before.

By Bus — The Overnight Workhorse

The Mumbai-Goa bus route is one of the busiest in India. Buses run every 30 minutes in peak season. It's not glamorous, but a Volvo sleeper gets the job done — you sleep through the journey and wake up in Goa.

Major Routes

Mumbai → Goa

Most Popular
Distance: 580 km
Time: 10-12 hrs
Cost: ₹1,200-2,500

Departs from Borivali, Dadar, Thane (Kalwa Naka), Andheri, or Vashi (Navi Mumbai). Arrives at Mapusa (North) or Panjim (Central). Night departures (8-10 PM) are best. Thane and Dadar are the most common pickup points for premium operators.

Pune → Goa

Most Doable
Distance: 450 km
Time: 8-9 hrs
Cost: ₹1,000-2,000

Shorter route through the Western Ghats. MSRTC Shivneri buses are surprisingly good. Night departure, arrive by dawn.

Bangalore → Goa

Distance: 560 km
Time: 10-11 hrs
Cost: ₹1,500-3,000

Via Hubli-Dharwad. KSRTC Airavat runs excellent multi-axle Volvos on this route. Book KSRTC directly for best prices.

Hyderabad → Goa

Distance: 660 km
Time: 12-14 hrs
Cost: ₹1,500-2,800

Long ride but doable overnight. Fewer operators — book early in peak season. SRS Travels and VRL run this route.

My tip: Always book a Volvo AC Sleeper — the ₹500 extra over semi-sleeper is the difference between arriving refreshed and arriving wrecked. Book via RedBus or AbhiBus. Skip the front rows — they bounce more on Goan roads.

By Car / Self-Drive — The Road Trip Option

The Mumbai-Goa road trip is iconic for a reason — but let me be honest about what you're signing up for. It's 10-12 hours of driving, the last 3 hours through winding ghat roads. Beautiful? Yes. Tiring? Also yes.

Route Options

Mumbai → Goa via NH66 (Coastal Route)

Distance: 580 km
Time: 10-12 hrs
Tolls: ~₹500-700
Fuel: ~₹3,500-4,500

The classic route (formerly NH17, renumbered to NH66 — older signs and locals still say NH17). Good highways until the ghats near Amboli/Chorla. Stop at Ganpatipule — one of the most revered Ganpati temples on the Konkan coast, about 330 km from Mumbai. A 5 km detour off the highway but worth the break.

Pune → Goa via Kolhapur & Amboli Ghat

Distance: 450 km
Time: 8-9 hrs
Tolls: ~₹400-600
Fuel: ~₹2,800-3,500

The most doable road trip to Goa. Shorter, well-paved, and the Western Ghats section (Amboli) is stunning. Recommended for first-time drivers.

Bangalore → Goa via NH48

Distance: 560 km
Time: 10-11 hrs
Tolls: ~₹600-800
Fuel: ~₹3,200-4,000

Via Hubli and the stunning Dandeli-Anmod ghat section. The last 100 km through the ghats is winding but beautiful. Not for nervous drivers.

My tip: Leave at 4-5 AM to beat truck traffic on the ghats. Don't drive in monsoon (Jun-Sep) — landslides are real. If you're renting a car in Goa itself, a scooter is more practical for getting around.

Getting From the Airport / Station to Your Hotel

This is where most people get ripped off. Here's the honest breakdown.

Prepaid Taxi Counter

Available at both airports and Madgaon station. Fixed prices on the board — no haggling. Prices differ significantly between airports.

From GOI (Dabolim)

Calangute/Baga: ₹1,200-1,600
Panjim: ₹900-1,100
Palolem: ₹1,500-2,000
Arambol: ₹2,000-2,500

From GOX (Mopa)

Calangute/Baga: ₹1,200-1,500
Arambol: ₹600-900
Panjim: ₹1,400-1,800
Palolem: ₹3,000-3,500

Goa Miles (Official Ride App)

Goa's government-backed taxi app, created partly as a compromise with the powerful local taxi unions who have historically opposed ride-sharing apps like Uber and Ola. 10-15% cheaper than prepaid counters. Download before you land. Works at airports and train stations but can be spotty in remote areas.

Hotel Pickup

Many mid-range and luxury hotels offer free or subsidized airport transfers. Always ask when booking — this can save you ₹1,000+. Some budget stays partner with drivers who charge fixed rates.

Local Transport You Should Know About

Motorcycle Taxis ("Pilots")

Licensed yellow-metered bikes that give rides. Cheaper than car taxis and available in most towns. Flag them down or find them at market stands. A true Goan experience.

KTC (Kadamba Transport) Buses

Goa's state transport runs Panjim-Mapusa-Margao local buses for ₹15-50 and inter-state AC buses to Mumbai, Pune, and Bangalore at significantly cheaper rates than private operators. The Panjim KTC bus stand is the main hub.

River Ferries (Free!)

Flat-bottom ferry boats crossing Goa's rivers are completely free and run all day. The Panjim-Betim, Ribandar, and Old Goa ferries are how locals cross rivers daily. They carry bikes and scooters too — a classic Goan experience.

Avoid: Negotiating with drivers outside the terminal. They'll quote 1.5-2x the prepaid rate. Always use the prepaid counter or Goa Miles. If arriving late at night, pre-book a pickup through your hotel.

Leaving Goa — Onward Connections

If Goa is part of a longer trip, here are the most common onward routes.

Goa → Hampi

Overnight train from Madgaon to Hospet (10-12 hrs, departs evening). One of India's most incredible UNESCO ruins. Book 2AC or 3AC for comfort.

Goa → Gokarna

Bus from Margao or Palolem (4-5 hrs, ₹400-600). Or train from Madgaon to Gokarna Road station (3 hrs). Quieter beaches and a famous temple town.

Goa → Mumbai

Flight (1 hr, ₹2,500-5,000), train (10-12 hrs), or overnight bus (10-12 hrs). Mandovi Express overnight is the local favorite.

Transport Pro Tips (From 14 Years of Goa Trips)

Book flights on Tuesdays

Statistically the cheapest day for Goa flights. Set fare alerts on Google Flights.

Rent a scooter on arrival

The single best transport decision in Goa. ₹350-600/day depending on season (peak Dec-Jan up to ₹700). Carry your driving license.

Monsoon = limited transport

Some ferries stop, roads flood, flights get delayed. Build buffer time into your plans Jun-Sep.

Train tickets sell out fast in Dec-Jan

Book exactly 120 days ahead on IRCTC at 8 AM. Set a reminder — they go in minutes.

Don't book return transport for Sunday night

Every weekend tourist leaves Sunday evening. Flights are expensive, buses sell out, roads are jammed.

Consider arriving at one airport, departing from the other

Fly into GOX (North), explore southward, fly out of GOI (South). Avoids backtracking.

Once you're in Goa...

Frequently Asked Questions

Dabolim (GOI) is closer to South Goa and Panjim, with more flight options. Manohar (GOX) near Mopa is better if you're heading to North Goa beaches like Arambol, Morjim, or Ashwem. Compare fares on both — GOX sometimes has cheaper tickets on newer routes.
The cheapest option is a non-AC sleeper bus (₹600-800), but I wouldn't recommend it. A Volvo AC sleeper costs ₹1,200-1,800 and is far more comfortable. Trains in sleeper class cost ₹400-600. Budget flights can be as low as ₹2,500 if booked 3-4 weeks ahead.
Prepaid taxi counters are available at both airports — ₹800-1,500 depending on destination. The Goa Miles app is the official ride-hailing service. Some hotels offer free airport pickups — always ask before booking a cab. Avoid negotiating with drivers outside the terminal.
Absolutely, especially the Mumbai-Goa route. The Konkan Railway passes through 92 tunnels and over 2,000 bridges with stunning coastal and mountain views. The Jan Shatabdi (daytime) gives you the best views. Book a window seat on the left side heading south.
Yes, it's about 580 km via NH66 (10-12 hours). The road is mostly well-maintained with good rest stops. Best done as a dawn departure to avoid truck traffic. Tolls cost around ₹500-700 one way. Not recommended during monsoon — the ghats get dangerous.
Book 4-6 weeks ahead for the best fares. Peak season (Dec-Jan) prices can be 3-4x normal — book those 2-3 months ahead. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically cheapest. Monsoon season (Jun-Sep) has the lowest fares, often under ₹2,000 from Mumbai.
Uber technically exists in Goa but don't count on it — availability is extremely limited, and Goa's taxi unions have historically opposed ride-sharing apps. Ola is essentially absent. Goa Miles is the state-backed compromise app and is more reliable, though still inconsistent outside Panjim and Margao. For daily travel, renting a scooter (₹350-600/day) is far more practical. You can also flag down motorcycle taxis ("pilots") — licensed yellow-metered bikes that are cheaper than cars.
Madgaon (MAO) is the main station — most trains stop here, and it's well-connected to both North and South Goa. Thivim (THVM) is closer to North Goa beaches. Karmali (KRMI) is closest to Old Goa and Panjim. Pick based on where you're staying.

Now that you know how to get here, figure out what to do when you arrive.
